Avian Flu Vaccine in Development for Deadly Asian Strain

BETHESDA, Maryland, May 28, 2004 (ENS) - The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is giving two U.S. companies contracts to work on development of an investigational vaccine to protect against H5N1, the avian influenza flu strain that broke out in Asia in 2004, causing 23 human deaths and the destruction of hundreds of millions of birds.

California Water System Fined Half a Million Dollars

SAN JOSE, California, May 28, 2004 (ENS) - Federal District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel has issued an order imposing the largest penalty ever against a public water system in the United States. The case involves privately owned drinking water companies serving 28,000 consumers in Salinas and other parts of Monterey County, California.

West Adirondack Forest Roads Closed to All-Terrain Vehicles

ALBANY, New York, May 28, 2004 (ENS) - New York State is moving to close 54 roads in the Western Adirondack Park to unlimited all-terrain vehicle access. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Erin Crotty Wednesday announced a series of proposed amendments to Unit Management Plans that will address public all-terrain vehicle use.
