Deadly Tornados Strike the Midwest

LINCOLN, Nebraska, May 26, 2004 (ENS) - States across the Midwest are mopping up from a weekend of devastating tornados and rainstorms that destroyed homes and flooded whole towns. Nineteen confirmed tornadoes hit southern Nebraska Saturday night.

Polish National Jailed for Caviar Smuggling

MIAMI, Florida, May 26, 2004 (ENS) - The Justice Department announced Monday that Mariusz Chomicz, the president of a caviar company in Poland, pled guilty and was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his part in a caviar smuggling conspiracy. The conspiracy ring used paid couriers to smuggle suitcases filled with caviar into the United States.

Court Allows Tuscan Garden on Staten Island

NEW YORK, New York, May 26, 2004 (ENS) - A challenge to three garden restoration projects planned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and Department of Cultural Affairs for the Staten Island Botanical Garden located in Snug Harbor was dismissed late Friday by a New York County Supreme Court Judge.

North Umpqua Hydropower License Challenged in Court

Maryland Rejects $75,000 to Compensate Farmers for Bear Damage

SILVER SPRING, Maryland, May 26, 2004 (ENS) - Maryland’s first bear hunting season in 50 years is due to start in five months, but The Fund for Animals and The Humane Society of the United States do not want the hunt to start at all. They are offering a program that will compensate farmers for damage done by bears.
