Ag Secretary Funds Bird Flu Control and Prevention

WASHINGTON, DC, May 14, 2004 (ENS) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture is spending $13.7 million to address avian influenza. Part of the funding, $10.8 million, will be used to develop a national low pathogenic avian influenza control and prevention program, said Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman.

Michigan Governor and Tribes Protect Great Lakes

LANSING, Michigan, May 14, 2004 (ENS) - Governor Jennifer Granholm and the leaders of the 12 federally acknowledged Indian tribes in Michigan have signed an intergovernmental accord stating their commitment to the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Bird's Eye Sees Earth's Magnetic Lines

BLACKSBURG, Virginia, May 14, 2004 (ENS) - Migratory birds, as well as many other animals, are able to sense the magnetic field of the Earth. John Phillips, associate professor of biology at Virginia Tech, says they may "see the Earth's magnetic lines as patterns of color or light intensity superimposed on their visual surroundings."
