California Wildfire Season Starts Three Weeks Early

SACRAMENTO, California, May 10, 2004 (ENS) - San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside units of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) went on fire season status on May 3, about three weeks earlier than usual, but none too soon for two large wildfires that struck the state that same day.

New Reservoir Keeps Mine Waste Out of Sacramento River

REDDING, California, May 10, 2004 (ENS) - In a ceremony Thursday at the Iron Mountain Mine Superfund site in southwest Shasta County, local, state and federal officials celebrated the completion of the Slickrock Creek Retention Reservoir, which will cut the amount of pollutants flowing to the Sacramento River by 95 percent from historic levels.

California Energy Executive Convicted of Fraud

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, May 10, 2004 (ENS) - The president of a failed California energy company has been found guilty of fraud after a two week jury trial in Fort Lauderdale. E. Douglas Mitchell, who was the president of Los Angeles based PowerSource Corporation, was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud. Mitchell faces up to five years in prison.

WASHINGTON, DC, May 10, 2004 (ENS) - A former asbestos inspector with the District of Columbia Department of Health has been convicted of bribery and extortion charges for demanding and taking money to relax environmental asbestos rules.
