Urban Runoff Top Cause of North Carolina Impaired Waters

RALEIGH, North Carolina, May 7, 2004 (ENS) - The number one rated source of impairment of North Carolina's bodies of water is urban runoff and storm sewers, according to a new biennial state assessment. Stormwater runoff carries natural and human pollutants into waterbodies that may include sediment, nutrients, bacteria, oil and grease, trace metals, toxic and synthetic chemicals.

New York City Mandates Carbon Monoxide Detectors

NEW YORK, New York, May 7, 2004 (ENS) - In the first two months of 2004 there were four deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning in New York City, in addition to a number of building evacuations and subsequent hospitalizations. In response to these deaths and an estimated 300 deaths each year across the country, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a bill into law Wednesday requiring the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in multiple and private dwellings, schools and hospitals.

Tons of Waste Smother Hood Canal

OLYMPIA, Washington, May 7, 2004 (ENS) - Low levels of dissolved oxygen in the Hood Canal have been killing fish and other marine life and have resulted in the closure of the canal to fishing. Tons of waste material dumped into the canal have robbed the waterway of its oxygen, but a new set of suggestions for remedial action might help restore the canal to health.

House Bill Would Lift Protection for 94 Migratory Birds

WASHINGTON, DC, May 7, 2004 (ENS) - Three of America's oldest and largest animal protection organizations have asked the House of Representatives to reject a bill that they say would weaken the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and remove federal protection for at least 94 species of “non-native” birds, including certain species of storks, pelicans, cranes, swans, cardinals, and orioles.

Pennsylvania Reforests Five Counties

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania, May 7, 2004 (ENS) - Pennsylvania has started a four year, $8 million program to plant more than 20,000 shade trees and 2,000 acres of forested river and streamside buffers that are intended to restore lost tree cover in southeastern Pennsylvania.
